CAMBARA
Decking Installation Instructions
Handling:
Cambara decking is a kiln-dried product. It should be kept
clean and dry, stacked off of the ground and stored for proper air
circulation.
End Sealing:
After crosscutting, it is
recommended to seal all ends within 24 hours with a clear aqueous wax end
sealer. We recommend Anchorseal by UC Coatings.
This will reduce end checking.
Fastening:
Stainless steel fasteners
are highly recommended for their superior corrosion resistance combined with
maximum holding power and ease of use. Drill pilot holes at ends of boards and stay ¾” from the edges to avoid
splitting.
Installation:
1x4 decking should be installed on 12” o.c. and the 5/4x4 and the 5/4x6 decking
on 16” o.c. joists. Allow a gap of at least ¼” between boards to allow for air circulation and expansion.
|
Important Points: 1) Adequate cross-ventilation is very important. Decks should lie
at least 24" above the underlying surface and have open ventilation from
three sides. 2) All deck boards should be end-sealed immediately following
cross-cutting. |
Finishing:
We recommend that Cambara
decking be treated on all six sides with a high quality finish containing UV
inhibitors prior to installation. This will add to the longevity and
performance of your decking. Specifically, we recommend
Messmers UV Plus, which we have found to be
excellent at maintaining the traditional appearance of a Cambara deck. Messmers
is available through Thompson Mahogany in gallon-sized cans. Following
installation, Messmers should be applied to your Cambara deck once a year for
maintenance.
